Two women struck and killed on North Mesa Road
Monitor Staff Report Two Los Alamos women were killed Friday night when a vehicle hit them as they were walking on North Mesa Road. A 6-month-old infant that was with the women appears to be in satisfactory condition. John G. Martinez, 41, 945 San Ildefonso Road, has been arrested in connection with the accident on charges of aggravated driving while intoxicated (DWI), two counts of vehicular homicide, driving on a suspended license, and careless driving. He is being held on a $250,000 cash bond. Capt. Marla Brooks, Los Alamos Police Department, said that Xunung (Michelle) Wu, 40, Kristi Lane, and Jing Xuan (Jeanshine) Shi, 36, Mendius Lane, died at Los Alamos Medical Center. The infant, Shi’s son, suffered a slight head injury and was kept at LAMC Friday night for observation. A hospital spokesperson said he was released Saturday morning to his father. Brooks said the baby was in a "heavy-duty stroller," which probably helped protect him. Brooks said that Shi died shortly after arrival at LAMC and Wu died several hours after arrival. The University of New Mexico Hospital’s Lifeguard helicopter was called in for transport, but was not used. Brooks said the women were walking eastbound in the roadway and on the south side of North Mesa Road between Terry Lane and the North Mesa Picnic grounds at the time of the accident. One of the women was pushing the stroller with Shi’s baby son. Martinez was also eastbound on North Mesa Road in a 1990 Ford, and hit the pedestrians from behind at about 8:45 p.m. Brooks said it did not appear that Martinez was travelling at excessive speed. Brooks said police received the report of the accident at 8:45 p.m. and responded quickly with Los Alamos Fire Department. She said the two women and the infant were also quickly transported to LAMC by LAFD. Police closed North Mesa Road from the picnic grounds to Terry Lane until early this morning in order to investigate the accident scene. Brooks said Los Alamos County Code dictates that "When practical, pedestrians will walk only on the left side of the roadway or shoulder, facing traffic which may approach from the opposite direction." |
