Xuming (Michelle) Wu, 39, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, in Los Alamos as the result of a tragic accident. She and another woman, Jean Shane, were struck by a car while taking a walk. Shane also died.
Xuming was born June 18, 1961, in Shanghai, China. As a child, she lived with her grandparents in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. At the age of 5, she moved to Xian, China, to live with her parents. After primary and secondary schooling, she took the National Entrance Examination and entered the Xian Jiaotong University of China in 1978. She earned a bachelor’s degree in science in 1982. After graduation, she was employed by Xian Jiaotong University, where in 1985, she met and married her husband, Quanxi Jia. Three years later, he began graduate school at the State University of New York at Buffalo. She joined her husband with their 3-year-old son in October 1989. After Quanxi earned his doctorate at SUNY in 1993, they moved to Los Alamos. Xuming attended classes at the University of New Mexico and received an accounting certificate in 1996. She worked at UNM-LA in 1997 and 1998. At the time of her death, she was employed by Los Alamos National Bank. "Xuming was the pillar of strength that built or loving and successful family," family members said. "She was a dedicated mother, a loving wife and a devoted daughter." At work, she was a supportive colleague and a diligent team player. Even with her busy life, she always found time to help her colleagues, friends and the community. Throughout her life, she displayed a rare combination of kindness, tenacity and friendliness. She was known for her strict adherence to high standards and principles. Her family, friends and colleagues will miss her dearly, and she will always live in their memories. Survivors include her loving husband of 16 years, Quanxi Jia; her two sons, Shawn Y. Jia, 14, and Richard Y. Jia, 5; her parents, Yang Jinwu and Wu Xuezheng of Xian, China; and two brothers, Xuqiang Wu of Los Angeles, and Wu Gang of Xian, China. The Xuming (Michelle) Wu (Jia Family) memorial fund account has been established at Los Alamos National Bank (Account No. 01-009117-01) to help bring family members from China and to assist the family through this difficult time. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Berardinelly Family Funeral Service, 1399 Luisa St., Santa Fe. Viewing starts at noon and the ceremony begins at 2 p.m. Family and friends will come to mourn the departure of a caring mother, loving wife and considerate colleague. |
