Monday, June 4, 2001 Suspect in Deaths Had DWI Arrests By Jeremy Pawloski Journal Staff Writer A Los Alamos man arrested Friday for drunken driving after his car allegedly struck and killed two women walking with an infant in a stroller has two prior DWI arrests, Los Alamos County police Sgt. Geoffrey Horne said. John G. Martinez, 41, of Los Alamos, is charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, and one count each of aggravated drunken driving, careless driving and driving on a suspended license, Horne said. Horne said Martinez registered a .27 and .28 blood alcohol count, more than three times the legal limit, when he took Breathalyzer tests at the jail Friday night. Horne said computer records showed the two prior DWI arrests matching Martinezs name and date of birth. Martinez was being held Sunday at the Los Alamos County Jail on $1 million bond, Horne said. Xuming Wu, 40, and Jing Xuan Shi, 36, died at Los Alamos Medical Center late Friday after the 8:45 p.m. accident on North Mesa Road. Shis 6-month-old son, Alfred Chen, was listed Sunday in satisfactory condition at University of New Mexico Hospital, according to hospital spokesman Don Butterfield. Capt. Marla Brooks of the Los Alamos County Police Department said the infant had been held overnight at Los Alamos Medical Center for minor injuries and released to family on Saturday. Brooks said Sunday that the two women were walking eastbound in a lane of traffic when they were struck from behind. Speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash, Brooks said. The stretch of North Mesa Road where the accident happened has a 35 mph speed limit. Brooks said that it appears the strollers sturdy construction may have helped protect the infant involved in the accident.
