Qingming Festival ( April 5 ) is around the corner. It is about five months since Grandma passed away. Often in the deep night Grandma’s kind face and her cordial words came to my mind. Recently I have been thinking of expressing my affection to her. Today I have decided to write an article about her.
My grandma was born in an intellectual family, receiving good education since childhood. Later she studied in the English Literature Department of Catholic University in Beijing . After graduation she began working as an English teacher and continued throughout her life. During her career she received innumerable credentials, and medals. She had pupils everywhere. You just look at her once beautiful hair turning gray today. She had put in a lot of hard work to impart knowledge and educate people. Here I recall some of the past events.
After retirement, she often gave free English lessons to a few students, among whom were university students, as well as pre-school kids. At the same time she translated some articles about the educational development abroad for the Board of Education. So she was very busy every day. Unfortunately just at this time, Grandma came down with rheumatoid arthritis. All the joints in her body were swollen and deformed in some way. Her sufferings were so great that nobody could stand looking at her. I remember Grandma had to take five or six kinds of medicine to relieve her pain. How destiny teased human beings! Later Grandma contracted glaucoma in her eyes, and soon she became blind. In spite of all the tortures from the serious illness, Grandma was still very optimistic, always thinking of others first, and insisting on tutoring her students English orally, until one day when she could teach no more.
Just as Professor Zhou Xiaojing of Tianjin Conservatory said: “Teacher Wu Shaohua , just like the quiet moon, had devoted all her energy and her life to her students.” My grandma’s optimistic spirit of making progress every day makes people cherish the memory of her forever.
Grandma began teaching me English when I was a first or second grader in the elementary school. At that time whenever she gave me an English lesson, I always made a tearful scene and pledged my life not to learn. Facing this “precious troublesome kid” as me, Grandma always instructed me with extreme patience. Up to now, whenever I read the English lessons which Grandma taught me, the picture of my learning English together with Grandma always comes to my mind. It is a pity that those days like that did not last long.
Grandma fell in a coma in November, 2001. Two days later, she left the world in peace and without any pains. Grandma’s entire life not only left behind a treasure of knowledge for me, but also a large amount of nourishment for my mind. I will certainly live up to Grandma’s last expectation, studying hard and making progress every day. I will be a person useful to the society.
