In Memory of My Sister Wu Shaohua
Wu Baohua
My elder sister’s entire life was one of devotion and total reliance on our Savior the Lord Jesus Christ.
She accepted the Grace of our Lord and became a Christian in 1935, when Dr. Song Shangjie came to Tianjin to spread the Gospel.
My sister was exceptionally good at the English language as it was granted by God. All her life she worked hard at the post she was given, which is to teach English. In her daily work she was strict, scrupulous and steadfast, thereby receiving the praise of many. During the summer and winter vacations she was often invited to compile the English textbooks for the Middle School students, which indicated her deep foundation in the language. Even after her retirement, she was still found to be involved in translating some articles about the educational development abroad for the Board of Education whose aim it was to enhance the educational development of our country. Leading a frugal life herself, she often helped others in need, especially those elderly believers, out of her own pocket. After the Great Cultural Revolution, the school recognized her contribution by raising her monetary compensation, all of which she donated to the school to improve the lighting condition of the school. Many of the students came to her home to be tutored or to have piano lessons and she never charged any fees as she considered the joy of teaching far outweighing any monetary compensation. My sister was exceptionally gifted at the piano and she served her Lord faithfully for thirty years by playing the piano in church every Sunday from 1935 to 1966, together with other Christians.
In 1992 my sister came down with rheumatoid arthritis and found it very difficult to move around. Moreover, in 1994, she sustained a fracture of the neck of the femur, and had been bed ridden since. During those years she had frequent fevers and acidosis, and developed bedsores in many areas of her body and she also had glaucoma in her eyes. One can only imagine her suffering! Yet her reliance on her Savior was complete. One could not find her sad or pessimistic nor hear a sigh or complaint. She continued to read the Bible, pray and sing hymns to be close to the Lord. Her favorite Psalm was
Psalms 103, which she read everyday in praise of God.
Though my sister had experienced a lifetime of setbacks and frustrations and also suffered from a myriad of illnesses in her old age, she had as Paul said, fought the good fight and completed the race which the Lord her God had ordered for her and with sufficient victory to spare. She is now resting in her Lord’s arms and embrace and surrounded by His Grace, until that day when I shall meet her again in heaven
